Shrimp cultivation protested

Several thousand people including woman brought out a procession in Bardal union and held a rally in front of Assassuni Upazila Nirbahi Officer's office on Wednesday protesting shrimp cultivation by making enclosures in cultivable lands.

Quoting local people, police said, Awami League leader ABM Mustakin leased 300 bighas of land from landowners and was trying to cultivate shrimp.

The rally with Bardal Union Parishad memeber Abdur Rahman in the chair was addressed by, among others, Dr Mokhlesur Rahman, UP member Suranjan Dhali, Asadul Islma, Bardal UP Chairman Yunus Ali Sana, Rafiqul Islam and Kalipada Biswas.

They said shrimp cultivation in cultivable lands will affect the environment and damage the soil due to use of saline water. This will ultimately make the lands barren.

They vowed to resist the move anyhow.

Later they submitted a memorandum to the UNO to stop the move and threatened of tougher action programme for non-compliance.
