Brothers manager barred from cricket grounds

Brothers Union's cricket manager Amin Khan was made persona-non-grata at cricket grounds for one year by match referee Shiper Ahmed yesterday for physically assaulting umpire Mahbubur Rahman during the club's Premier League match against Old DOHS on Wednesday.Amin reportedly attacked the umpire after Brothers lost to DOHS by one run and also charged Mahbub with biased umpiring. According to cricketers involved in the match, newcomers DOHS enjoyed blatant favours from Mahbub which enabled them to win the game and lift the league title with one fixture left. Eyewitnesses at the Fatullah Stadium said that DOHS had apparently lost the game when last man Shahadat Hossain Rajib was clean bowled by Brother's former Indian international Thiru Kumaran. But as Rajib was heading back to the pavilion, umpire Mahbub suddenly changed his mind and signalled a no-ball and called the batsman back. The ruling enabled DOHS to complete a nervy victory as captain Akram Khan batting at the other end hit the winning runs. Brothers captain Halim Shah and wicketkeeper Anwar Hossain were also fined by the match referee for using abusing language against the umpire while Kumaran and Johnny were fined Tk 3,000 each for the same reason. The hearing was held yesterday.
