Our Correspondent, Sylhet
The energy ministry enquiry committee that visited the Tengratila Gas Field site yesterday declined to say anything about their findings to the reporters while leakage of gas in bubbles at several points in the field area under Doarabazar upazila of Sunamganj district continued till yesterday. The committee members headed by the Additional Secretary of the Energy Ministry Ehsanul Fattah visited the burning well and the surrounding areas where gas leakage in bubbles has continued for the last five days. They talked to engineers, workers and employees of the Canadian company Nico and the Chinese firm engaged in the drilling as sub-contractor. Besides, the committee members talked to the inhabitants of the neighbouring villages, who had to leave their homesteads following the gas blowout and fire Saturday last. The six member committee, formed on January 10, was asked to submit its report by January 20. The other members are Petrobangla Chairman SR Osmani, Startegic Policy Expert of Hydro Carbon Unit Moinul Haque, Managing Director of Sylhet Gas Fields Company Limited Rahman Murshed, representatives from environment ministry and Sunamganj district administration. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the neighbouring villages who had left their homesteads started returning during the last two days. Some did so defying the authorities' instructions which declared one square kilometre area around the gas field as 'danger zone', and hoisted red flags to keep people away. A number of shops at Tengrabazar just beside the gas field boundary also opened.
