PM calls South Asian heads to sympathise


Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday made phone calls to the heads of state and government of the South Asian countries affected by Sunday's earthquake and tidal waves and offered all possible assistance to help them face the disaster.

During her talks with Sir Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Khaleda reiterated her profound shock at the loss of lives and property in the natural calamity and expressed sympathy and solidarity of the people and government of Bangladesh with them.

She proposed to send necessary assistance to the affected countries as per their requirements and ability of Bangladesh.

The prime minister referred to the recurrence of natural calamities in the region and stressed the need for collective initiatives to cope with such situation.

Leaders of the affected countries thanked the prime minister for her phone calls.

Meanwhile, the prime minister yesterday directed the authorities concerned to send necessary assistance to the affected countries as per their requirements.
