Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
Two committees have started investigating why and how all the documents related to the sensational case of gang-rape in Tanore upazila 17 years ago went missing.Top officials here yesterday said the one of one-man committees are under the district collectorate and the other under the police administration. "Both committees have been verbally asked to work and they will also look into how the High Court orders took more than nine years to reach Rajshahi and who are responsible for the anomalies", said a senior official preferring anonymity. Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sayed Ahsanul Kabir told The Daily Star that Additional District Magistrate Munir Hossain has been asked to look into the missing case documents. The DC also said punitive measures would be taken if anyone under his administration were found to have been involved with the anomalies. Rajshahi Superintendent of Police Masud Mia said Assistant Superintendent of Police Mozammel Haque was investigating how some documents went missing from respective police stations. The DC also said he has ordered reconstruction of the documents within the shortest possible time in the wake of a bleak prospect for the recovery of the papers. He explained the trial of the case might start with the reconstructed documents until the original documents are found. The gang-rape took place in April 1988.
