One arrestee in Iraq hails from Begumganj

Abu Ashraf Mohammad Sharif of Begumganj is one of the four Bangla-speaking people arrested by Iraqi police on December 19.

Sharif's father Mohammad Awal identified him by reports and photographs published in the media.

A manpower agent of Sonagazi, Sayedur Rahman, sent Sharif, 28, abroad in October last year, Awal said yesterday. In exchange of a substantial amount of money, Sayedur promised to arrange a job for Sharif in Greece.

"Sharif phoned us on December 13 from Iran, where he reached after crossing some other countries. He told us he would be going to Greece through Iraq in a few days," Awal said.

Worried about his son, Awal pleaded with the Iraqi government to ensure his safety. He also urged the Bangladesh government to arrange an early and safe return of his son.
