Hasina's son arrives today

Different front organisations of the main opposition Awami League (AL) plan to host a reception for party chief Sheikh Hasina's son Sajib Wajed Joy, who, accompanied by his wife, arrives in Dhaka this morning.

Leaders and workers of Jubo League and Chhatra League, the youth and student fronts of AL, would line up along the streets from Zia International Airport (ZIA) to Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi. They would carry colourful banners and placards welcoming Joy, grandson of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Besides, the reception would feature a decorated horse-cart and two elephants.

Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina will receive Joy and his wife at the airport. Opposition men from different parts of the city and adjacent districts would gather outside, the leaders said.

On reaching Dhaka, Joy and his wife would first lay wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi. They would stay at Hasina's Sudha Sadan residence.

Joy's trip has been widely linked to speculations that he may soon get involved in politics.

Saber Hossain Chowdhury, political secretary to Hasina, however, said the trip is nothing but a personal one and Joy may stay here for up to three weeks.

Responding to queries of reporters on Sunday, Hasina said whether her son would join politics depends on the wishes of the people.

Joy told reporters during a stopover in London on Monday that he wishes to work for the people of Bangladesh only if they want so.
