Hasina accuses PM's family, colleagues of huge graft

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday alleged prime minister's son Tarique Rahman has amassed huge wealth through illegal businesses and siphoned a part of it to Malaysia.

"The Malaysian government has forfeited it and an investigation is on over there about the matter," she told a discussion organised at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh by Bangabandhu Parishad in the city to mark the Victory Day.

Hasina, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, accused the prime minister's family members and cabinet colleagues of making fortunes through illicit businesses, noting, "The only thing they know is how to make money through graft."

According to her, the PM's family members alone have transferred about Tk 80,000 crore abroad in the first two years of the present government.

The AL chief expressed utter dissatisfaction over the 'zero progress' made in investigations into the August 21 grenade attacks on an AL rally in 'the last four long months', saying, "How will the inquiry will make any headway when the government itself is involved in the crime?"

"Forget the August 21 incident. Ten to 12 more grenade attacks took place before that, but members of the law enforcing agencies could not hunt down the attackers for reasons known to all," quipped the opposition chief.

She urged people to join and intensify the ongoing movement of the AL-led 14-party opposition combine aimed at unseating the BNP-Jamaat-led coalition and reinstating a democratic and secular government.

"Due to its misdeeds and misrules, the government is already in a shaky position. Now is the time to unite and gear up the movement to force it to quit," she said.

Hasina once again blasted the government for misusing Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the name of improving law and order, and said custodial death is regarded as one of the most outrageous crimes in the world, which the present regime is committing every day.

The AL chief alleged, "The prime minister has raised the special force as she has no confidence in the army, police or BDR."

She said the law and order would not improve without taking action against the godfathers and asked, "If the Rab is neutral in its action against terrorists why cannot it identify the godfathers?"
