PM urges people to pursue politics of peace, progress

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday urged people to take part in politics of peace, progress and development pursued by her government and reject the politics of destruction.

"An opposition party does politics of destruction. It does not want development," she told a public meeting at Bhabanipur in Kalmakanda upazila of Netrakona district.

Referring to the improvement in law and order, the prime minister said people want to live in peace, but the opposition party wants to patronise the criminals.

Stressing the need for foreign investment for employment generation and rapid economic development, the prime minister said the foreign investors are showing interest to invest in Bangladesh as they are satisfied with the present investment climate.

She said the present government inherited terrorism, corruption and a shattered economy from the past regime. "But we have succeeded in improving the situation by the grace of Allah."

People are now living in peace as terrorism has been curbed and economy strengthened, she said. The prime minister also mentioned the formation of the Anti-Corruption Commission to root out corruption.

She inaugurated the development works of Lengua-Nazirpur-Shidly-Netrokona Road. The 31-km road will be developed along with the construction of a number of bridges and culverts.

She unveiled the plaque of Qutrakanda Growth Centre in Najirpur and offered munajat. She also distributed Black Bengal goats among some poor women.

The prime minister made a number of development pledges that include declaration of Kalmakanda a municipality, upgrading the upazila health complex to a 50-bed hospital from the existing 31-bed, expansion of rural electrification and construction of educational institutions and roads.
