Police Gang Rape
Public outcry over probe, medical reports
Amanur Aman, Kushtia
Local people and human-rights organisations in Chuadanga yesterday rejected the medical test and police probe reports claiming to have found no proof of the gang rape of Dolly, a 25-year-old housewife, in a police camp overnight Saturday.Governance Coalition (GC), an alliance of seven rights bodies of Chuadanga, accused the police and the medical examiners of trying to cover up the outrage and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the policemen involved. In a meeting at Chuadanga Bar Association office yesterday the GC decided to provide legal assistance to the victim and fight on her behalf. The coalition will hold a press conference today on the issue. MEDICAL TEST The medical test of the victim carried out by a three-member team headed by Dr Saidur Rahman of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital on Monday -- 40 hours after the incident -- reported yesterday to have found no proof of the gang rape. The other members of the team are Dr Noor Uddin and Nurse Super Ismat Ara. "The rapists perhaps used condoms, so no semen was found," told one of the team members preferring anonymity. "But we have seen some injury marks in the woman's genital passage that prove something has been forced into it," the doctor added. Besides, the woman is still bleeding, sources at the hospital said. The victim too told some local human rights activists about the policemen's use of condom in raping her. POLICE PROBE The police probe body into the incident headed by Chuadanga Additional Superintendent of Police Awlad Hossain submitted its report to the police super yesterday. The report said police did not rape the woman but the Gokulkhali Police Camp in-charge, Abdul Kuddus, had forcefully oral sex with her, which Kuddus admitted to the probe body. "We are sure the woman was not raped," Awlad told The Daily Star yesterday, adding, "The camp in-charge [just] pushed his penis into her mouth." The district police authorities have suspended eight policemen including camp in-charge Kuddus and Habildar Rokunuzzaman, the main culprits of the incident. The rest are constables Harun, Rashid, Iftekhar, Kabir, Saiful and Sohel Rana. The authorities have also closed all the 22 police personnel stationed at the camp. Dolly filed a rape case with Alamdanga Police Station accusing 14 policemen. VICTIM'S VERSION "After gagging me with a piece of cloth, they raped me by turns and beat me throughout the night," Dolly told The Daily Star yesterday lying in her bed at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. "They raped me again in a field near the police camp," she said. A number of the villagers living near the camp said on condition of anonymity they heard the victim's screams throughout the night Saturday but no-one dared to go to her rescue. The only witness to the gang rape, Akram Hossain, who drives a locally made motorised vehicle called Alamsadhu, though reported the incident earlier, denied it later to the police probe body. Sources said when police asked Akram to take Dolly to her house at Bishnupur, he refused, as her condition was critical after the gang rape. Police then left Dolly at the house of a man named Farhad in the area and asked him to take her to a hospital.
