Rickshaw strike observed partially
Staff Correspondent
The rickshaw strike was observed partially in the city yesterday. The strike was called in protest at the government decision to make the road stretching from Kalabagan to Azimpur off-limits to rickshaw. City commuters had to face some problems in the morning, but rickshaws were available after 11:00am like other days. Many people even could not feel that there was a rickshaw strike. "I have come to know about the strike as you have asked me about it," Ripa, a student of Azimpur Agrani Girls School, told this correspondent. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Rickshaw-Van Malik-Sramik Oikya Sangram Parishad, an organisation of rickshaw pullers and owners, postponed its tow-day strike from 2:00pm after getting an assurance from police commissioner office about the meeting of their demands. Another organisation, Committee for Rickshaw Eviction Prevention Movement which called dawn to dusk hartal, alleged that the government misled the people by giving false information through electronic and print media to foil the strike and hartal. Committee leaders threatened to go for a tougher movement if the government does not withdraw its decision to make VIP roads off-limits to rickshaws within three days.
