Pepsi handball begins


Four teams -- hosts Bagerhat, Narail, Jessore and Madaripur -- made good start in the first phase of the Pepsi 17th National Women's Handball Championship that began yesterday at the Bagerhat Stadium.

The preliminary round matches of the men and women championships will also be held in five other regional venues across the country.

On the opening day, hosts Bagerhat beat Faridpur by 13-10 goals (first half 6-3), Narail defeated Khulna 23-10 (first half 14-5), Jessore beat Khulna 17-13 (first half 8-8) and Madaripur outplayed Faridpur 32-5 (first half 15-1).

A total of 19 teams, divided into three groups, are taking part in the first phase of the women's meet while 20 teams, also split into three groups, will compete in the men's section of the meet.
