Registration
English medium schools ignore deadline

Registration of English medium schools has been disappointingly low despite a government-mandated deadline set for October 31, said top officials of the education ministry and education boards.

"We expected a considerable number of private English medium schools would turn up to meet the government deadline but the response has been very insignificant," said the deputy secretary of education ministry Bikash Chandra Saha.

Between 10 to 15 institutions in the Dhaka Education Broad's region sought registration within the deadline, Bikash Chandra Saha said.

The government had originally asked all private English medium schools to register with the education ministry by September, but the deadline was later extended by one month.

A national committee headed by the education secretary is scheduled to sit today to review the current situation.

Inspector of Schools of the Dhaka Education Broad Ataur Rahman Khan said that only 25 out of several hundred English medium schools in the capital and adjoining districts have registered in the last five years.

The institutions that have so far registered under the Dhaka Board include Don Vosco, Maple Leaf, New Universal Tutorial, Spectrum International School, Wills Little Flower, Sunny Dale, Step by Step, Dhanmondi Tutorial, Scholastica, Hasan Ali Int. School, Bangladesh International School, Kids Tutorial, South Bridge, Mastermind, Sun Beams, Turkish Hope and European Standard School.
