Powerful explosives recovered from train in Gaibandha
'Regional Commander' of Jamaat-ul-Mujaheedin held

Railway police recovered 24 pieces of Gelatin 'high speed explosive bars' and 124 'electric detonators' from a compartment of Santaher-bound 484 Down local train on November 12 at Bonarpara station, about 20 kilometres south of Gaibandha and arrested a youth.

The arrested youth--Anisur Rahman, 22--hails from Barokona Abdullahpur village in Shghata upazila.

Later, acting on his confession, police arrested Amjad Hossain, alleged 'regional commander' of Jamaat-ul-Mujaheedin an Islamic extremist group and Sajjadur Rahman Sabuj from a dormitory at Fakirpara in Gaibandha town. Amjad Hossain hails from Jogodishpur village and Sabuj from Koregacha village in Gobindagnaj upazila

Sources in Government railway Police (GRP) said they started a thorough search of the train as soon as it arrived at Bonarpara railway station at about 10.30 am.

At the rear compartment, Anisur Rahman was found sitting surrounded by some other youths with a shopping bag in his lap.

As GRP attempted to search his bag, all the youths jumped and were fleeing, leaving the bag. Police chased and caught Anisur.

They recovered six inches long 21 high speed Gelatin explosive bars each weighing 120 grams, three others weighing 125 grams each, 125 electric detonators and two mini tape recorders from the bag.

The arrested persons were interrogated by a team comprising Police Superintendents of Bogra and Gaibandha and high officials of NSI and GDFI and GRP, police sources said.

Being informed, a team of army explosive experts from Rangpur cantonment rushed to Gaibandha. They examined the explosives.

The powerful explosives are generally used to blow up hard rock, bridge and culvert. These may cause heavy damage to building and conerete structure, a police official said quoting army experts.

"The bars bore 'Made in India' seals and detonators bore 'Made in China' seals", the police official said preferring anonymity.

The tapes recovered from the recorders call for establishing Islam, replacing democracy, calling it KufriI (no belief in God).

The army team obtained a court order and destroyed the explosives on November 13 at Bonbari field adjacent to Bonarpara railway station.

Hundreds of people thronged the spot to witness destruction of the explosives.

Ground-shaking big bangs were heard from about three kilometer distant when the explosives were destroyed.

Police on Saturday produced the arrested persons before a Magistrate Court, which placed them on seven days' remand for interrogation.

During interrogation Anisur Rahman confessed that he was introduced to Amjad Hossain by one Haroon of Barokona village in Shaghata upazila.

Haroon is the elder brother Mamun, arrested earlier in connection with Joypurhat bomb incident.

Two separate cases were filed with GRP police under the Explosives Act.
