Fight for dredger: 100 hurt in clash


At least 100 leaders and activists of Jessore Keshobpur Kobadak Bachao Andolon (movement to save the Kobadak in Jessore) including its convenor Mahabubur Rahman were injured, 15 of them seriously, when villagers attacked them at Saroshkati in Kalaroa upazila on Thursday as they attempted to take a dredging machine from there.

Ten of the injured have been admitted to a local hospital.

Quoting local people, police said, the leaders and activists of Kapotakhha Bachao Andolon lauched an initiative to take a dredging machine of BITWA to Jessore. As they were cutting a road at Saroshkati to make passage for the dredger, the villagers attacked them.

A tense situation is prevailing in the area. Jessore Workers Party Secretary Iqbal Kabir Zahid, who is also a leader of the Kobadak Bachao Andolon, at a press conference at Keshobpur Press Club later condemn the attack and demanded arrest and punishment to the culprits.
