Renaming NU
Yet another step to politicise education system: Jalil

Awami League (AL) General Secretary Abdul Jalil yesterday protested the National University (NU) senate's decision to rename the university Ziaur Rahman National University.

Calling for a united move to resist the renaming process, Jalil said the decision is yet another step to politicise the entire education system of the country.

He was addressing a discussion titled 'Misrule of the alliance government and the way to overcome it'. The meeting was organised by the Council for the Evaluation and Research of Bangabandhu in the city.

Jalil said bureaucracy is supposed to be neutral, but the present government has politicised it by having its favoured people appointed to the higher government posts.

The alliance government has corrupted every sector of the state and which is why the country has once again been tagged as the most corrupt among the countries on earth, he added. "No way could we afford to let it go any longer and the only way to break the vicious cycle of corruption is to oust the government."

And all the pro-liberation forces need to converge for a greater movement to free the country from the despotic rule of four-party alliance, Jalil continued.

Dr Harun Ur Rashid read the keynote paper. He noted that during the BNP-Jamaat's rule of three years, about 30 thousand people were killed, about 1.5 lakh politically persecuted while over 17 lakh fell victim to various crimes.

Besides, as many as 307 people were killed in police custody, said Dr Harun, a professor of political science in Dhaka University.

Dr MA Wazed Mia, eminent scientist of the country, presided over the discussion. He said political parties should play a positive role to educate the new generation to take advantage of developments in science and technology.

"But instead, some political parties exploit the young generation in their own interests. This must end," he stressed.

Among others, Bangladesh Awami Jubo League Chairman Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Dhaka City AL Organising Secretary Shah Alam Murad spoke at the discussion.
