Kanchi Kanchar Mela celebrates 48th year

On October 5, the 48th founding anniversary of Central Kachi Kanchar Mela was observed at the Kachi-Kancha Bhaban. This pioneering children's cultural organisation was founded by Rokonuzzaman Khan, well known as 'Dada Bhai'.

On this occasion, Morten Giersing, Representative, UNICEF was the chief guest while Nurjahan Begum, Editor, The Weekly Begum was present as special guest.

The function was presided over by Khondker Ibrahim Khaled, Director, Central Kachi-Kanchar Mela.

In his speech the chief guest Morten Giersing said, 'Young people comprise over half the world's population. And they are speaking out and taking active leadership roles throughout society. The aim should be to ensure that the youth play a central role in building a world truly fit for children

'The challenges facing children far exceed the capacity of any single organisation. Building a world that is fit for children requires the partnership of every government, individual, and organisation sharing the values of the United Nations(UN) and a respect for children's rights. This includes eminent and ordinary individuals, civil society organisations, voluntary agencies, philanthropic foundations, trade unions, academic and research institutions- and, of course, children and young people themselves,' he added.

Special guest Nurjahan Begum said, 'Kachi Kanchar Mela is a part of our history. It has successfully promoted cultural activities among children.'

Chairperson Khondoker Ibrahim Khaled said, 'Kachi Kanchar Mela has been voluntarily generating funds to run the social welfare children's organisation for so many years. Our major achievement is that we have created many culturally oriented citizens.'

The speech was followed by a cultural programme along with a painting exhibition. Clearly the Kachi-Kanchar Mela has been a catalyst in bringing culture to the youth of the country.
