About 70,40,000 children are engaged in 'risky jobs in Bangladesh. Of them 10,30,000 are engaged in 'most hazardous jobs' and 1,01,676 work as domestic help, according to a child labour survey conducted by the Bureau of Statistics. The figures were disclosed at a press conference organised by Satkhira Human Rights Development Project (HRDP) here yesterday. Held at the office of Satkhira Unnayan Kendra, it was addressed by, among others, HRDP Chief Advisor Principal Asit Kumar Majumder, General Secretary Prof Pobitra Mohon Das and Satkhira District Child Affair Officer Abul Alam. They said these children are being deprived of all basic rights and opportunities. The ILO Convention prohibits full time job by children under 14. Child rights are being violated in the country due to poverty and lack of awareness. They said the government is responsible for the violations and urged it to enact laws banning risky jobs by children in line with the Child Rights Convention of the United Nations.
