2004 Player of the Year
FIFA shortlists 35
Internet Report, Zurich
England and Manchester United teenage sensation Wayne Rooney has made it on to the 35-strong 'shortlist' for FIFA's 2004 Player of the Year award.Theodoros Zagorakis, who led Greece to Euro 2004 glory in Portugal, is also named along with Zinedine Zidane, the current holder of the prestigious title. The winner will be announced by world football's governing body at the closing ceremony of their centenary anniversary year at the Zurich Opera House on December 20. Player-of-the-tournament Zagorakis is the only member of Greece's victorious squad included -- with the likes of striker Angelos Haristeas and top-rated defender Traianos Dellas among those missing out. In contrast, Copa America winners Brazil have five nominees including Adriano who replaced Ronaldo at the event in Peru and ended up as top scorer with seven goals in six games. He will be one of the favorites for the trophy while three-times winner Ronaldo, who skipped the tournament in July after a disappointing season with Real Madrid, is also in the frame. Real colleague Zidane, who has since announced his international retirement after a disappointing Euro 2004 with France, is also a three-time winner. The 18-year-old Rooney, who was arguably the top performer in Portugal before limping out early in a quarterfinal defeat on penalties by the hosts, will also be expected to feature high in the judging. He enjoyed a hat-trick debut performance for his new club, Manchester United, on his Champions League debut last week in a 6-2 victory over Fenerbahce. French striker Thierry Henry and Arsenal colleague Robert Pires are also among 10 English Premiership-based players named.
