Skop strike partly successful

The first half of the 24-hour countrywide strike at mills and factories called by Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (Skop) was partially observed without any untoward incidents yesterday.

The leaders of the Skop, an organisation of labourers and employees, said it is hard to make such a programme a success since there is no strong trade union representing the important industries including the garment factories.

However, they claimed the strike was successfully observed in the city's Hazaribagh and Tejgaon areas, especially in the morning, and also in Narayanganj, Khulna and Barisal.

The Skop called the strike on September 5 to press the government to implement an agreement on a nine-point demand signed between the two sides in January.
