Abductions, killings go unabated
2 schoolgirls, woman kidnapped; 2 outlaws shot dead by rivals

Three including two schoolgirls were abducted in Kushtia and outlaws gunned down two rivals in Jhenidah and Meherpur Tuesday.Chandana Rani Mondol, 14, daughter of Kalipada Mondol and student of class ten at Manoharpur High School, was kidnapped from Manoharpur village in Kumarkhali upazila. Family sources said Sajib, son of Rezaul Haq, and his accomplices forced her into a microbus and took her to an unknown place at around 4:00pm. Sajib had threatened to kidnap her when his proposal to marry her was turned down, they added. Rumana Khatun Kanak, 13, daughter of Akbar Ali and student of class seven at Rifyatpur High School, was abducted in Kodalia village in Daulatpur upazila. Moazzem, son of Jhantu Pramanik, picked up Kanak on her way home from school at about 3:00pm. Her family had earlier rejected Moazzem's proposal of marriage. In Kumarkhali, criminals kidnapped Tapan Kumar Thakur, 35, son of Shambhu Kumar Thakur, and demanded Tk 5 lakh for his release. Sources said alleged outlaw Sabuj, son of Imamul of Panti, abducted Tapan, owner of Satya Jeweller's, from his house in Ramdia village at around 11:00pm. As many as 119 people including 46 students were kidnapped in the district since January. Of them, 12 were killed, police rescued six, eight are still missing and the rest have bought their freedom. In Meherpur, cadres of Janajuddha, a faction of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), called Arman, 36, out of his house, took him to a nearby water tank and shot him dead on the spot at 8:00pm. In Jhenidah, Janajuddha killed Katu Mondol, an alleged outlaw of PBCP's ML faction and accused of two murders, on Hingapara field.
