BNP sweeps municipal elections


The ruling BNP-backed candidates yesterday won five of the eight chairmen posts in elections to as many municipalities. The following candidates were unofficially elected chairmen.

Mahbub Ahsan of the BNP was elected Chairman of Swarupkati Pourasabha. Mahbub bagged 5,576 votes while his nearest rival Delwar Hossain of the Awami League (AL) got 2,228 votes.

Joynal Abedin of the BNP was elected Chairman of Khagrachhari Pourasabha. Abedin polled 10,095 votes against 6,492 of his nearest rival Abul Kashem (independent).

Zakirul Islam of the BNP was elected Chairman of Charghat Pourasabha with 6,543 ballots. His nearest candidate Anwar Hossain of the AL got 6,293 votes.

Lokman Hossain of the AL was elected Chairman of Narsinghdi Pourasabha, fetching 19,595 votes, while his nearest rival Abdul Matin Sarker (AL-rebel) bagged 11,216 votes.

Yeakub Kufia Helal of the BNP was elected Chairman of Bajitpur Pourasabha. He polled 6,569 votes and his nearest candidate Mesbahuddin Ahmed of the AL bagged 4,471 ballots.

Shafiqul Islam Baby (AL-rebel) was elected Chairman of Raozan Pourasabha. Shafiq fared 10,528 votes, while his nearest rival Debashish Palit of the AL bagged 7,989.

Abdul Mannan of the BNP was elected Chairman of Chatmohar Pourasabha. Mannan polled 3,509 votes and his nearest rival Mirza Dulal of the AL got 3,131 votes.

Mirajul Islam of the AL was elected Chairman of Santhia Pourasabha with 4,505 votes. His nearest rival Mozammel Haq Master of (AL-rebel) polled 4,367 votes.
