Knife attack in Beijing kills one child

A knife-wielding security guard at a Beijing kindergarten went on the rampage yesterday, slashing 15 young children and killing one of them -- a four-year-old boy, Chinese state media and medical sources said.

Three teachers were also injured when the security guard attacked children and staff at the Beijing University Number One Hospital's kindergarten with a kitchen knife, they said.

The shocked and injured children were taken to hospital, where a four year old boy died, a nurse told AFP.

Two other children and a teacher suffered serious wounds to the neck and throat and were in critical condition, the Xinhua news agency said.

Police arrested the kindergarten's 51-year-old doorman, identified as Xu Heping, after the early morning attack, reports said.
