Humayun Azad's son flees from Kidnappers

The son of noted writer Humayun Azad ran away from his abductors about two hours into his kidnap on Dhaka University campus yesterday.

The family suspects the abductors to be of the same gang that nearly killed Humayun Azad on February 27 in front of Bangla Academy on the campus.

Three unknown bearded men of about 30 kidnapped Anannyo Azad, a class ten student, from in front of British Council at 6:15pm on his way back to their house at Fuller Road.

"They stopped me saying they wanted to talk with me. As I refused, two of them held me by my hands and dragged me to a dark road in SM Hall," Anannyo told The Daily Star last night.

There were five to six more guarding the area, he said.

"They asked me about my father's next visit abroad but I refused to tell them anything. They got furious and one of them slapped me and broke my glasses, saying they would not release me unless I tell them everything about the visit," he said.

The abductors were pressing him to reply quickly to their queries while one was brandishing a stick-like metal object, he said.

"As, at one point, only one was holding me and another standing beside, I pushed him, jumped over a wall and ran for my life," Anannyo continued.

The abductors chased him down a several yards but gave up seeing him entering their house at the university teachers' quarters. On information, plainclothesmen went to Azad's house later and asked Anannyo about the kidnappers.

Anannyo also told The Daily Star he saw some men sporting similar clothes hanging around the place since the attack on his father. Another man asked him about his father's next visit abroad.

Azad returned to the country from Bangkok in May after treatment at Bumrungrad Hospital.

Talking to The Daily Star at 12:40am today, the duty officer of Ramna Police Station said they did not know anything about the incident.
