Indian Oil Asian Cup 2004
Positive in defeat
Al Musabbir Sadi from Colombo
Dav Whatmore must have been hopeful that after restricting Pakis-tan to 257-7 the Tigers would give the defending champions a run for their money in their Asia Cup group match at the SSC ground yesterday. But that was too good to be true. "That was not a very big total to chase. It looked well within our grasp and we decided to go for it," the Bangladesh coach said. For their middle-order failure, Whatmore wanted to give a little bit credit to the opposition as well. "They had tight, disciplined direction but we could have pushed them harder. But that was not the case." "We have to turn things round if we have to make an impression in this tournament because the way things are going it would not be beneficiary for us. We want to win matches in the second round. The Australian thought that the performance of left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak was one of the positive points in the match. Captain Habibul Bashar, disappointed after their latest batting debacle, said: "Restricting Pakistan to 257 was an achievement but still, had our fielding been better, we could have halted them to a lower total." Replying to a question, Bashar added that the team's intention was to go for a win. "The wicket was better than on Friday. Alok Kapali had a chance to improve his record after failing to reach double figures in last ten innings as he was playing well. But he missed that opportunity. Still we want to rely on him," Bashar said. He sounded happy about Javed Omar's consecutive half-century which gave the team some relief. Javed, who suffered a cramp, informed that he still felt the pain and will only know about his condition when he will run. "It was misunderstanding between Alok and my runner Ashraful," referred Javed to his run out. "The way we started, we were keen on seeing it to the end," said the gritty opener who admitted being troubled by Mohammad Sami's swing. Bob Woolmer was very pleased to win his first match as Pakistan coach. "It was very interesting to see how the cricketers play and respond to our plans. It was very important as we got the bonus point as well," he said. "Bangladesh are improving and there was a time today when they were doing very well in the batting. They could have pushed us more but Sami really changed the complexion in his second spell. Both Shoaib (Akhtar) and Danish Kaneria also bowled well in the middle."
