15 hurt in attack on landless in Shyamnagar
BNP leader's involvement alleged

At least 15 landless people were injured, four of them seriously, in an attack by miscreants allegedly led by a ruling BNP leader at Phoolbaria in Shyamnagar upazila on Tuesday.

The attack came when the landless persons were returing home after a sit-in demonstration in front of Shyamnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer's (UNO) office. They were pressing for implementation of their 8-point demand.

Seriously injured Wahedul Islam, 37, Rubiya Khatun, 27, Parul Bala, 30, and Lalita, 2, are living in Jamuna shoal in the upazila.

They were shifted to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex.

The miscreants allegedly led by local BNP leader Liakat Ali tried to foil the sit-in demonstration.

However, the attempt to foil the demonstration programme was foiled by the landless people.

A meeting was also held there which was addressed, among others, by Saifullah Laskar, former Union Parishad chairman Abul Khair, Abdus Samad, Bablu, Dr Ali Ashraf, Aminul Islam, Mir Ashraf Ali and Okalata Ali.

The speakers demanded arrest and punishment to the miscreants led by local land grabbers who are trying to evict 84 landless families living in the shoal.

They threatened a greater agitation in future if their demands are not fulfilled. They also condemned attack on the landless after the sit-in demonstration programme.
