Hartal called in Rajshahi for gas supply
Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
Residents of Rajshahi are enforcing a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the city today demanding supply of gas through pipeline within this fiscal year. Rajshahi Gas Andolon Parishad (RGAP), an organisation, which includes leaders of ruling and opposition parties, professionals, social and cultural activists, called the shutdown. Mahtab Uddin, convenor of the RGAP, yesterday told reporters that they would form a human chain on July 30 and submit a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of Rajshahi to press home their demand. Other socio-cultural organisations also expressed their solidarity with the hartal and announced similar programmes to urge the government to ensure gas supply to the northern district town. Farid Mamud Hasan, general secretary of Rajshahi Traders' Allied Council, an alliance of 32 local trade bodies, said they would observe a half-day strike on August 22, four-hour hunger strike on July 27 and organise a human chain at the coty's Zero point on August 14.
