British envoy meets PM, lauds democracy
UNB, Dhaka
The British high commissioner in Dhaka has appreciated Bangladesh's vibrant democracy and said the country can give a further boost to its economic growth by utilising its potentials. Newly appointed British High Commissioner Anwar Chowdhury made the remarks when he called on Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at her office yesterday. Anwar Chudhury, who was injured in a bomb blast at Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet on May 21, said the incident has not brought any change in his affection for Bangladesh. He expressed his gratitude to the government for its prompt response to the incident and appreciated the government measures against terrorism. The envoy said his country is interested to impart training to Bangladesh police. Chowdhury also appreciated the government's achievements in health and education sectors, particularly women education and empowerment, and poverty reduction. On foreign investment in Bangladesh, the envoy said there are a lot of investors in the United Kingdom who are willing to invest in Bangladesh. He responded positively as the prime minister sought more British scholarships for Bangladeshi students and assistance for training of civil servants to ensure good governance. The British envoy renewed the invitation to the prime minister to visit the United Kingdom and have an audience with the British Queen.
