Chechnya's acting president survives landmine attack

A landmine has blasted a convoy carrying Chechnya's pro-Moscow acting president, killing one person, though he himself escaped injury, Russian news agencies say.Itar-Tass news agency said yesterday the blast hit Sergei Abramov's convoy as it sped through Grozny, regional capital of the rebel Russian region. One member of his staff was killed, two were injured, but Abramov escaped unscathed, it said. Abramov took over as interim leader in the turbulent territory after its pro-Moscow president Akhmad Kadyrov was killed by a bomb attack on May 9 during public celebrations. Elections for a new president are being held on August 29, though Abramov, 32, a former Chechnya prime minister, is not standing as a candidate. An interior ministry official said the person who was killed was a bodyguard of Abramov.
