Morshed off to ACD meet in China

Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan yesterday left for Qingdao, China to attend the Third Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) which starts today.

He will represent Bangladesh in the dialogue and organise discussions on e-commerce, roads and communication.

The foreign minister will also present a concept paper titled "Rehabilitation of Working Children of Asia" at the two-day dialogue session. He will join the 22-member ACD Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Tuesday.

Prior to his departure, Morshed told the BBC Bangla Service that Dhaka would also push for creation of an Asian fund, which was proposed at the second ACD in Thailand in May 2003.

The fund, he said, would work to coordinate and finance different poverty alleviation programmes in Asian countries.

Bangladesh will also work as a prime mover on poverty alleviation in Asia along with Vietnam and Cambodia during the dialogue session while the concept paper will be based on a seminar on rehabilitation of working children in Dhaka last year, he added.

One of the main agenda of the ACD will be to pursue a process to launch an Asian Bond, which was declared in its second session. The forum has been the only Asian platform to announce political support for development of an Asian bond market.

The foreign minister returns home on June 23.
