Non-arrest of Bangla Bhai shows PM's failure: Hasina

Opposition Leader and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina yesterday said Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has no control over the administration and her government became non-existent when her reported order to arrest Bangla Bhai was not carried out.

Referring newspaper reports, Hasina said, "When prime minister ordered to arrest Bangla Bhai, one of her ministers dared to say that Bangla Bhai has given birth to a silent revolution for maintaining law and order. Where is the government then?"

Addressing a delegation of Bangladesh Shikkhak-Karmachari Oikya Parishad (BSKOP) at the party's Dhanmondi office, Hasina said the BNP-Jamaat coalition has showed its absolute inability to govern the country and now it was time to force them to step down.

On activities of Bangla Bhai and his men in Rajshahi, she said Islamist groups have emerged and are becoming powerful with every passing day, and Khaleda Zia's government has passed the responsibility on to fundamentalist forces to tackle outlawed members.

Hasina said the country is facing acute image crisis abroad for misdeeds of the alliance government, and killing of AL lawmaker Ahsanullah Master and bomb attack on the British envoy in Sylhet has only made matters worse.

She said if Awami League voted back to power, the teacher community would not have to agitate on the street for realising their demands.

"We would do whatever we can do for you as you are the architect of the nation," she told the teachers.

The BSKOP leaders sought cooperation from the AL president for realising their 17-point demand.
