Blast at Shahjalal Shrine condemned


Different organisations and individuals yesterday condemned the bomb blast at Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet on Friday in which three people were killed and about 70 others including British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury injured.

In a statement, EU heads of mission have expressed their grave concern over the bomb attack terming it an act of senseless aggression.

They also expressed sympathy to the members of the bereaved families.

The mission heads urged the government to bring to justice those responsible for the terrible act.

Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury also expressed concern over the bomb blast.

Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil has said the failure of thegovernment to investigate such bomb blasts in the past has encouraged the communal forces to repeat such heinous acts.

He said being a partner of the coalition government the communal elements have been tarnishing the image of the country abroad through their misdeeds.

Opposition Chief Whip M Abdus Shahid and AL presidium member Abdus Samad Azad also expressed grave concern over the bomb blast.

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) condemned the bomb attack in the shrine as a barbarous act. The federation in an emergency meeting with its President Abdul Awal Mintoo in the chair expressed deep shock at the death of three people.

Chittagong City AL held a rally at Laldighi Maidan yesterday to condemn the bomb attack. Addressing the rally, City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury protested government repression on AL leaders and workers.

Ekatturer Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee also condemned the bomb blast in the shrine. In a statement the committee said the communal forces in the alliance government are responsible for the attack.

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Bangladesh Christian Association, SAMATA, Human Rights and Legal Aid Association Sylhet, Bangladesh Muktijodha Smriti Sangrakkhan Parishad, 11 Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Gono Azadi League, Bangladesh Chhatra Moitre and Tahfij-e-Haramine Parishad Bangladesh also condemned the bomb blast.
