GrameenPhone Corporate League
Left-arm spinners spit venom
Sports Reporter
There was a debate when left-arm spinners hogged the spotlight in the West Indies-bound squad a week ago. Whether it was the right move or not, the local scene has become a tweaker's domain going by what happened in the GrameenPhone Corporate Cricket League on Sunday. Musharraf Rubel was unheard of until his appearance for Bangladesh Biman against Bashundhara Group at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium. But his astonishing exploits of 6-31 gave the national flag carrier an unlikely 65-run win against the leaders of the second round of the first-ever league for business houses. Chasing Biman's 237-9, Bashundhara looked set to post their third win when they raced to 122-1 by the 22nd over. However, Rubel had other ideas and changed the whole complexion by running through the strong batting line-up of Bashundhara, who lost their last nine wickets for just 50 runs. Another left-arm spinner Tamim Bashir starred for GrameenPhone, who thrashed MM Ispahani by eight wickets at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. The Khulna spinner captured 5-11 in 5.5 overs as Ispahani were shot out for 116. At the Fatullah Stadium, it was yet another strong display by the BCB Development Squad, which followed up its exciting tied match with GrameenPhone, with a seven-run win over BADC. BIMAN V BASHUNDHARA On a low and uneven track at Dhanmondi, Biman scored a competitive 237-9 in 50 overs with their captain Sanwar Hossain leading from the front. Sanwar, a national discard, anchored the first part of the inserted Biman innings with a fine 61 off 93 balls, studded with two fours and one six. Rubel and Syed Russel then provided the late flurry adding 42 runs off 36 balls for the ninth wicket. But Bashundhara appeared to have the match in their grip when makeshift opener Sabbir Khan (42 off 74 balls) and Al-Shahriar (67 off 112 balls) laid the platform. They put on 99 runs for the second wicket after right-handed opener Gazi Salahuddin gave a tame catch at short-cover in the ninth over. Biman, however, clawed their way back into the contest when off-spinner Sanwar trapped a dangerous Sabbir leg before in his first over. The departure of Sabbir, who hit two boundaries, sparked Bashundhara's collapse with Rubel enjoying a field day operating as the sixth bowler. The Dhaka university student, who played for Premier League side Brothers Union last year, first dismissed in-form Faisal Hossain (1) before having the wicket of big Akram Khan (6), Enamul Haque (13) and Naimur Rahman (2) to destroy the much-vaunted middle-order. Bashundhara still had a chance with Al-Shahriar smashing the ball to all parts of the park however it was Biman's national all-rounder Mushfiqur Rahman who had the last laugh when he won a crucial lbw decision against the one-down batsman. Shahriar hit five fours and pulled left-armer Ilias Sunny for two sixes. It was Biman's second win after their six-wicket thrashing of Gazi Tank at Fatullah Stadium on Saturday. GRAMEENPHONE V ISPAHANI Khaled Mahmud's GrameenPhone cruised to their second win after Bashir caught Ispahani in his spinning web. Sent into bat, Ispahani were bundled out for 116 in 35.5 overs with Bashir claming 5-11. Bashir ripped through the middle-order after left-arm paceman Monjurul Islam and another left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, one of the two uncapped players picked for the West Indies tour, began the carnage. GrameenPhone raced to victory 117-2 in 31.4 overs with opener Anisul Hakim hitting an unbeaten 62, his back-to-back fifty. He struck eight boundaries in his 101-ball knock. GrameenPhone's star recruit Alok Kapali scored a 41-ball 37 that included seven hits across the rope. BCB DEV SQUAD V BADC The under-17 boys of the BCB Development Squad, who are making a guest appearance in the competition, continued to impress. They thrived on a half-century by captain Kamrul Islam to score 219-9 in 50 overs. Kamrul hit 68 off 100 balls with six fours and a six while opener Ashraful Islam contributed 40 off 51 balls. Sakib Al Hasan captured four wickets for 26 in eight overs and Sajidul Islam claimed 3-19 in 6.5 overs as BADC were bundled out for 174 in 34.5 overs.
