Roddick, Haas in qtrs

American Andy Roddick breezed past Robert Kendrick on Wednesday, advancing to the quarter-finals of the US Men's Clay Court Championship with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

The top seed, Roddick opened the tournament Tuesday with a straight-sets win over Denmark's Kenneth Carlsen.

It was his first ATP Tour match on clay this season following 33 -- including Davis Cup action -- on hard courts.

Roddick set up a quarterfinal meeting with eighth seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria as he seeks his third title of the season, which would tie him with Roger Federer and Dominik Hrbaty for the tour lead.

Kendrick advanced to the semifinals in San Jose earlier this year, only to lose to Roddick, who ended up winning his first title of 2004.

Also winning Wednesday was veteran American Todd Martin, who outlasted Franco Squillari of Argentina, 7-6, 7-6.

Martin made the quarterfinals for the first time this year. Last season, he advanced to one and finished with a 16-11 match record.

Seventh seed Luis Horna of Peru and Melzer also won Wednesday.

Horna rallied for a 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 triumph over French qualifier Stephane Robert and Melzer bounced Tomas Behrend of Germany, 6-2, 6-4.

There also were a pair of first-round matches. Sixth-seeded American Robby Ginepri fell to Germany's Tommy Haas, 7-6, 6-4 and No. 5 Andrei Pavel of Romania defeated Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, 6-4, 6-3.
