Eight killed in road accidents

Eight people were killed and 18 others injured in separate road accidents in Manikganj, Satkhira and Chittagong on Wednesday. Of them, four were killed in Manikganj, three in Satkhira and a college student was killed in Chittagong. Our Manikganj Correspondent reported that a road accident at arapara on the Dhaka-Paturia Highway left four people, two of a family, dead and 12 others injured at about 10:00pm. Witnesses said the accident occurred when a pickup van rammed a truck standing on the road. Both the dead and the injured were passengers of the pickup van. The dead are Fatema, 27, her son Jamal, 7, of village Taluknagar under Daulatpur upazila of Manikganj, Gafur, 28, of village Ambalpur under Goalundu upazila of Rajbari and Majid, 30, of Arapara in Shibalaya upazila of Manikganj. The injured were admitted to Uthali Health Complex. In Satkhira, three people, including a schoolteacher, were killed and 32 injured, 14 of them seriously, in a road accident on Kaliganj-Ujirpur road in Kaliganj upazila on Wednesday, according to our correspondent. The dead are Sristi Dhar, 50, an assistant teacher of Mazhar High School in Kaliganj, Saddam, 14, son of Abdul Kader Gazi of village Narayanpur and Shahida Khatun, 30, of village Batnadanga in Kaliganj. The seriously injured passengers are undergoing treatment at Kaliganj, Sakhipur, Nalta and Satkhira Sadar hospitals. They are Tayeb gazi, Rabeya Khatun, Monowara Khatun, Samrat Sarkar, Chhanda Sarkar, Sarathi Rani, Rafiqul Islam, Siddique, Liakat Ali, Mahbub, Zakhir Hossain, Laxman Biswas, Ziad Gazi, Saiful, Zahanara and Abdur Rahman. Police and eyewitnesses said the accident took place at Hazi's intersection when a Kaliganj bound bus from Ujirpur skidded off the road and fell into a ditch at about 4:00pm. BSS adds: a student of Chittagong Government Commerce College was killed and three others were injured in a road mishap a Isphahani railgate near Foy's Lake. The dead is Tuhin Chowdhury, a student of first year honours in accounting. Police said the mishap took place when a truck hit an autorickshaw in which Tuhin and three others were travelling. The injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
