Probe delay dents committee's credibility
Chief of JS body on communications ministry says

Annoyed by the delay in submission of probe reports by sub-committees, the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the communications ministry yesterday said the procrastination was making his committee ineffective and eroding its credibility.

"The committee is losing its credibility and effectiveness as the sub-committees are making delays in submission of probe reports," Syed Manjur Hossain told a meeting of the body at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban yesterday.

The parliamentary body formed three subcommittees to probe the allegations of corruption in import and distribution of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-run auto-rickshaws and taxicabs, allocation of land for setting up CNG gas stations and illegal resorts near the Jamuna Bridge.

But no subcommittee came up with their reports until yesterday.

The committee extended the report-submission deadline to May 30 and asked the subcommittees submit their reports in time.

"If they fail again, I will be compelled to initiate other ways to probe the allegations," Manjur said.

Nadim Mostafa, convenor of the subcommittee on import and distribution of CNG-fuelled vehicles, said he was busy in his constituency in the wake of heightened outlaw violence.

The subcommittee was formed on January 7 after allegations of corruption were raised against Communications Minister Nazmul Huda. The communication minister rejected the allegations.

The subcommittee on illegal resorts near the Jamuna Bridge under Ataur Rahman Khan was formed in December and the subcommittee on allocation of land for setting up CNG-gas stations was constituted on February 14.

Mahmudul Haque Rubel, convenor of the gas station subcommittee that is yet to sit for a meeting, said he received the gazette notification from the parliament secretariat three to four days ago.

He committed to submitting the probe report by the new deadline.

The committee also discussed the activities of Bangladesh Railway asked its authorities to realise over Tk 12,000 crore long outstanding with different organisations.
