Erratic Power Supply
15 hurt as cops club agitating farmers

At least 15 farmers were injured at Mohonpur Sadar Upazila here yesterday when police made a baton charge on a farmer demonstration that demanded uninterrupted power supply to run the irrigation machines.

Of the injured, Amir Hossain, Zahangir Hossain, Shafiqul Islam Islam, Abdul Latif and Abdul Hamid were admitted to hospital, where their condition remained critical, said sources.

At around 10am several hundred farmers brought out a large procession from the Upazila Parishad premises and paraded the streets. They staged a sit in at the Barind Project office.

Sources said, police charged baton on the farmers to disperse them as they started hurling brickbats at the Power Development Board (PDB) office.

Police charged baton again on another group of farmers who after being reorganised at the Upazila Parishad office premises were preparing to bring out a procession.

Earlier, farmers held a meeting where they formed a 20-member movement committee to press for their demand of uninterrupted electricity supply between 5pm and 11pm.They threatened the authority concerned, with tougher movement, if power supply was not regularised within 24 hours.
