Widening the horizon
D-Link Netvision 2004

SPECTRUM Engineering Consortium Limited (SECL) and D-Link (India) Ltd. jointly unveiled their range of network technology offerings for Bangladesh at 'D-Link Netvision 2004', a yearly event held at a local hotel on February 19.

New ranges of high-tech path breaking networking technologies and products were introduced at the event. Netvision also serves as a market education programme for networking and communication technologies for small to large enterprises.

This is the second edition of Netvision in Bangladesh. D-Links clients and business partners were awarded at the event.

Netvision started off with the welcome speech by Forkan Bin Quasem, managing director of the SECL. He said D-Link has been involved in research and development for cost-effective, durable and robust networking technologies for the growing market in Bangladesh. Spectrum introduced D-Link in 1998, and since its inception, D-Link has added a lot to the country's ICT adaptation by serving banks, universities, ISPs and corporations.

He also said before the Netvision event, the D-Link team met Science and ICT Minister Moyeen Khan and briefed him on the present status of the ICT industry and also about SECL and D-Link's plans for Bangladesh. "We are arranging workshops and training people to make them aware of the latest trends in network technology. This is not just a business for us."

Explaining the new thrust on networking space, Shekar Kulkarni, GM Sales, D-Link (India), said, "We want to keep you in pace with the ground-breaking technologies related with wireless, VoIP, broadband and security."

Sharing some of his experiences in India, Shekar said there has been a 500-600 percent growth in the wireless market. The price has drastically fallen and most banks and conglomerates have already adopted wireless solutions. The ISPs are using it to setup Hotspots. Any person having an ISP access number can access the net.

In the western region of India, many pharmaceuticals and oil companies have already deployed wireless between 2-5km ranges. Two cement plants in Orissa and Gujarat have a wireless interconnection having 11mbps bandwidth, Shekar said.

Vishundas Slimkhan, manager, Tech Support, D-Link (India) Limited, gave a theme presentation on D-Link products roadmap, solutions and technology overview. He also gave a brief presentation on the latest worldwide trends in networking, which included D-Link products related to convergence, broadband, wireless, VOIP, Remote LAN access, VPN, e-commerce, video conferencing, multi-service networks and structured cabling.

"I have been following the development of ICT in Bangladesh for the last five years," said P Vyas, director, Sales and Marketing, D-Link (India) Limited, while speaking at Netvision. "I have seen a lot of development in the last five years. The Bangladesh government is also very keen to develop the ICT sector."

He also discussed how the Indian government has taken the initiative to reach technology to the common people. In Goa, anyone who have passed higher secondary exams can get a PC from the government by just showing his certificate along with Rs 1000.

"We have to take technology to the grassroots level," he observed.

Daffodil Computers Ltd., Information Solutions Ltd. (ISL), Beximco Computers Ltd., CyberNet, Business Technology, Total Office Systems & Solutions (TOSS) and NCLL Systems Limited received awards for System Integrators of D-Link.

RM Systems Limited, Rishit Computers, Khan Jahan Ali Computers, Tilottoma Computers and Communication and Business Link Computers Ltd. won the reseller category.
