Atish Dipankar's 1,024th birth anniversary observed

The 1,024th birth anniversary of Buddhist scholar Atish Dipankar Srignan was observed at his native village Bajrojogini under Sadar upazila of the district yesterday.Speakers at a function at the village paid rich tributes to the Buddhist scholar who dedicated himself to spreading, reforming Buddhism. They urged the government to establish a university naming after him. Land Minister M Shamsul Islam attended the function as chief guest while Education Minister Dr M Osman Farruk, Japanese Ambassador Matshuhiro Horiguchi, Chinese Ambassador Chai Xi and High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Gamini Munasinghe as special guests. The land minister said the president has desired to set up a university in this area to keep the memory of Atish. Education minister said the memory of Atish has to be protected and his values and thinking also have to be instilled in the minds of the new generation through university, textbooks or by the Bangla Academy. Suddhananda Mahathero, president of Bangladesh Buddha Kristi Prochar Sangha (BBKPS) said President Iajuddin Ahmed has made a pledge to establish a university after Atish Dipankar. He also demanded naming of the planned Muktarpur bridge after Atish Dipankar. The function started at 3:30pm with laying of stone in memory of Atish Dipankar on 2.5 acres of land.
