Big guns of world cricket all enjoyed a fruitful day but none more than India who absolutely massacred Scotland one of the four ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup 2004 matches yesterday.India gave a frightening display of their batting prowess when the amassed 425 for three in 50 overs against the startled Scots in a 270-run drubbing at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. It was India's first match of the competition. Defending champions Australia coasted to a six-wicket win against Canada in Rajshahi. South Africa thrashed Uganda by eight wickets in Chittagong. Among the top teams only the West Indies landed in serious trouble against the little-known Irish in Khulna before escaping with a six run victory. All the matches passed off without any trouble despite a countrywide general strike called by the Awami Jubo League. INDIA V SCOTLAND Scotland captain Kavin Coetzer played into Group C favourites India's hands when he invited them to bat first on the batting paradise of the BNS. What happened next was a hiding Scotland will never forget. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan led the way by blasting the competition's first century. The main thrust was provided by southpaw Suresh Raina who made mincemeat of the opposition's bowling in a 38 ball 90 that produced 14 fours and two sixes. Before that Robin Uthappa and Dhawan gave the perfect foundation by putting on 175 in the opening stand. Off-spinner Ian Young broke the partnership when Uthappa offered him a return catch three runs short of a hundred. The right-hander's 79-ball innings had 14 fours and a six. Dhawan began slowly but accelerated towards the end to reach an unbeaten 155 off 138 deliveries with 15 hits to the fence and one over the ropes. Skipper Ambati Rayudu also joined in the fun with 53 off 51 balls. Scotland to their credit, managed to last the full 50-overs and finished with for 155 for 8. Skipper Coetzer mad an a impressive 62 off 94 balls. AUSTRALIA V CANADA Theo Doropoulos' half-century to guided the Aussies past their Group A rivals Canada's 164 at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium. Captain Tim Paine and man-of the-match Doropoulos gave the young Kangaroos a flying start scoring 56 in 5.4 overs before the skipper was lbw for 22. Doropoulos continued and reached 57 off 55 balls inclusive of eleven fours and a six. The win came rapidly as Australia surpassed the target in 28.2 overs. Canada's total was built around Soham Anjario's 50 off 94 balls. SOUTH AFRICA V UGANDA At the newly built Chittagong Divisional Stadium, Group B giants South Africa shot Uganda out for 125. Left-arm orthodox spinner Waylain September grabbed four wickets for 14 off ten overs as 33 extras contributed highest to the Ugandan score. Right-handed opener Andrew Birch made 56 not out off 89 balls to ease his side to victory in 28 overs. WEST INDIES V IRELAND The best encounter of the day was the Group D clash between the West Indies and Ireland. Kevin O'Brien's 95 almost steered Ireland to a shock win as they chased West Indies' 265 for eight. But they ran out of deliveries to end with 259 for 9. O'Brien paired Wilson to score 93 for the third wicket that unsettled the Indies. Wilson made 64 off 92 balls. Earlier left-handed batsman Abbas Fudadin, the hero of warm-ups with two centuries could make only 29 but West Indies still managed a challenging total thanks to opener Xavier Marshall who scored 83. The right-handed opener belted 15 fours and a six facing 81 balls to be adjudged man of the match. Ireland's leg-spinner Greg Thompson was the star bowler in the match for his haul of five for 49.
