All-out security


The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken all necessary steps to ensure highest security during the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup that begins at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.

The measures were finalised at a meeting at the ministry conference room yesterday with Minister Altaf Hossain Choudhury in the chair.

The minister directed all related departments to take strict security measures at the hotels where the players will be staying and at the stadiums and different practice venues.

The meeting also suggested to set up metal detectors at the stadiums to avoid any kind of untoward incident.

Aided by dog squads, armed policemen along with members of paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles will be deployed in and around the playgrounds across the country including the capital.

The youth World Cup, one of the three major events on the International Cricket Council calendar, will be the second biggest cricketing event to take place in the country after the Mini World Cup in 1998. Australia, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, West Indies, Zimbabwe and hosts Bangladesh are taking part in the competition that properly begins on February 15 across the country.

State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, Inspector General of Police Shahudul Haque, Director General of BDR Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ashraful Huda were present during the meeting.
