Jewellers keep shutters down protesting Feb 4 heist

Jewellery shop owners of Dhaka city kept their shutters down all day yesterday to protest robbery of over Tk 5.5 crore worth of jewellery from two retail outlets on Wednesday.The strikers threatened to enforce a countrywide strike of jewellers and stop paying Vat (value added tax) and other taxes if law enforcers fail to recover the stolen gold within the next three days. Yesterday's strike was observed at the behest of Bangladesh Jewellery Manufacturers and Exporters' Association, Bangladesh Jewellers Samity, Bangladesh Poddar (gold bar sellers) Samity and Bangladesh Goldsmith Association. Robbers looted gold and ornaments worth Tk 5.5 crore from Sultana Jewellers and Tk 5 lakh in cash from Mahanagar Jewellers at Karnaphuli Garden City in Dhaka in the early hours of Wednesday. Earlier, similar robberies were committed in the city's Sunflower, Nabarupa, Mou and Al Raju Jewellery shops but the perpetrators could not be arrested nor the gold recovered, said leaders of the four associations during a press conference in the city yesterday.
