A fighting half-century by veteran Jahangir Alam saved league leaders Dhaka from probable defeat against Chittagong on the last day of their Ispahani Mirzapore Tea Fifth National Cricket League match at the Comilla Stadium yesterday.Resuming the last day on 39-0, Dhaka required 367 more runs to secure an unlikely victory but they managed to avoid their first defeat in the first-class competition scoring 203 for eight when stumps were drawn. Middle-order batsman Alam made an unbeaten 51 off 135 balls hitting seven fours. He received magnificent support near the end from number ten Mosaddeq Hossain who made 13 off 54 balls. They put 40 runs for the ninth wicket. Off-spinners Sabbir Khan and Ahsanullah Hasan shared six wickets each to give Chittagong a chance of a win. Man-of-the-match Sabbir captured three for 81 to finish with a match haul of eight wickets. Hasan took three for 35 runs. The draw kept Chittagong in third place with 18 points. Dhaka, on the other hand, increased their tally to 30 points after seventh round of matches. Away at Jessore, Golam Mabud and Nasirul Alam both hit half-centuries as Sylhet, who began on 35 for no loss, batted out the day to make 266 in their second innings against Khulna. Opener Mabud made 64 off 109 balls with nine fours and a six while Nasirul contributed 59 off 147 balls that featured three boundaries. Spinner Tamim Bashir claimed five wickets conceding 56 runs in 31.3 overs. The drawn affair meant Khulna grabbed first innings points to increase their tally to 16 points. Sylhet however followed leaders Dhaka with 24 points. Rajshahi and Barisal received two points each when their match at Rangpur was abandoned with both teams unable to complete their first innings. The outcome left Rajshahi and Barisal both with 16 points each.
