The three-day Saarc summit in Islamabad was a "turning point" in the endeavour by the member countries to promote peace and prosperity of the people of South Asia, Pakistan Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali said yesterday."We have just concluded the 12th Saarc Summit which has been a success," Jamali told a special briefing on the outcome of the conference in Islamabad. "The Islamabad Saarc Summit is a turning point in the endeavour of South Asian countries to promote peace and prosperity of the people of the region," Jamali said. The Pakistani Premier said the "landmark decisions", taken at the Summit, had provided a roadmap which, if implemented, would put South Asia on a "fast track of growth and development". Pointing out that the Saarc process had been "repeatedly interrupted", he said the success achieved at this conference has been "remarkable. New thoughts and new contents have been added". The South Asian region would have to face the challenges of globalisation and "the imperatives of geo-economics" had made the Saarc nations to resolve differences and disputes and simultaneously carry out economic cooperation. The Summit has reaffirmed the commitment of Saarc nations to the objectives of peace, stability, amity and progress through strict adherence to UN Charters and the principles of the Non-aligned Movement, Jamali said. He said that South Asian nations were committed to honour the sovereignty, equality and territorial integrity as also to "non-use of force and non-interference in the internal affairs of each other". Jamali said the seven member nations agreed to resolve differences and disputes through peaceful means and dialogue and pledged to maintain good neighbourly relations. In the economic sphere, he said the members of the regional grouping also agreed to work together as "just and equitable partners for peace and prosperity".
