Waugh doesn't agree with Buchanan

Steve Waugh disagrees with much of what team coach John Buchanan wrote in his leaked letter of criticism of the Australian team's performance in the second Adelaide Test but defends his right to say it.In Buchanan's critique, he berated the Australian players for their "soulless" performance in the second Test loss to India as well as blasting them for deal-making and sponsorships which had become a distraction. Waugh, whose own farewell tour after 18 years of Test cricket was labelled as one of the factors distracting the players, said the issue was addressed at a team meeting here on Wednesday ahead of the third Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. "There's no problem there," Waugh said at his pre-match press conference. "He's entitled to his say and we don't have to agree with it. "That's the coach's job to fire off observations and to challenge the side but it doesn't necessarily mean they're true, and a lot of stuff in there I didn't necessarily think was right. "But we've talked about it, we're fine, there's no problems." Either as a result of Buchanan's trenchant criticism or because the Aussies find themselves an unaccustomed 1-nil down in a home series for the first time in a decade, Waugh has promised a lift in intensity in the third Test. "Being one down with two (Tests) to go is something we're not used to and it's a great opportunity for the side to show what they're made of," Waugh said. "There's been lots said about our great bowlers (Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne) not being there so there's a chance for other players to put their hand up."
