Free cataract surgery for poor


Islamia Eye Hospital (IEH) in collaboration with the Standard Charted Bank (SCB) yesterday launched an operation theatre to conduct free cataract surgery on 1,800 visually impaired poor people.

Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, governor of Bangladesh Bnk, inaugurated the operation theatre.

SCB staff of Singapore raised the fund for free surgery as part of their "Seeing is believing" programme.

Euleen Goh, chief executive officer (CEO) of SCB Singapore handed over a cheque worth about Tk 33 lakh for the surgery during her visit to Bangladesh in October 9.

Under the programme, the SCB has raised fund to restore sight to 28,000 visually impaired people in more than 55 countries across the world where the bank operates.

David Fletcher, CEO of SCB Bangladesh , IEH Chairman Mirza Ali Behrouze Ispahani, and Advisor Zaheda Ispahani were present.
