Hasina visits Monga-hit areas
UNB, Bogra
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday during her visit to monga-affected northern districts asked people to install a new government of their own instead of the government "indifferent" to public plight."The BNP-Jamaat alliance has failed to face the monga (a near-famine situation). When people are starving to death, the prime minister is performing Umrah. But serving the sufferers is also a prayer," Hasina said at a wayside rally at Matikali crossing on her way to Nilphamari. Hasina left Dhaka on a four-day tour to the monga-stricken areas in Nilphamari, Kurigram, Rangpur and Gaibandha. Hasina said the alliance government cannot give anything but corpses. "People have been suffering in the hands of 'looters'. She criticised the prime minister for not standing by the people. The former prime minister said her government made food surpluses, but people are dying of starvation following two years' "misdeeds and misrule". The AL president demanded immediate trial for the killing of Ramananda at Majhira in Bogra. Party's Presidium Members Matia Chowdhury, Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed, Bogra Awami League President Momtaz Uddin and acting General Secretary Majibur Rahman Majnu were present.
