DU law teacher arrested

Dhaka University teacher Shafiqur Rahman was arrested at an Elephant Road house last night for alleged manhandling of a judge and filing a false arson case.

Ramna police along with Dhanmondi police raided the house to arrest the lecturer of law at around 10:30pm.

Sub-inspector Anwar Hossain, duty officer of Ramna Police Station, confirmed the arrest, saying two warrants were issued against him.

The teacher drew fire from the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, for making 'derogative remarks' against Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in the classroom.

JCD activists at the university protested the teacher's activities, demanding his expulsion and punishment.
