60 year-old man gets life for raping girl
2 sentenced for violating housewife

A 60 year-old man has been sentenced to life term imprisonment for raping a 13 year-old schoolgirl. Abdul Quddus Mia, Judge of Barisal Speedy Trial Tribunal, handed down the punishment to shopkeeper Wazed Munshi. The girl had gone to his shop at the Muktijudha Bazar in Barguna town to purchase chocolate on her way to school on July 29 last year. The shopkeeper took her to a room in the backside of the shop and raped her. Police arrested Wazed after her mother Sajeda Begum lodged a rape case with Barguna Kotwali thana next day. In another verdict the judge awarded life term to two persons and fined them Tk one lakh each for raping a rickshawpullar's wife in Patharghata in Barguna district last year. The convicts are Abbas and Kabir. The judge declared the verdict on Thursday after examining 10 witnesses in 16 working days. In the judgment, the judge said capital punishment was avoided considering the age of the accused. The court ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Barguna to confiscate and sell properties of the accuses to realise the fine and to deposit the money with the state treasury. The two raped the housewife on April 2 last year when her husband was not at home. They were arrested after her husband lodged a case with Patharghata thana under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. SI Shahidul Islam filed charge sheet against them on July 18 last year. The case was transferred to the Barisal Speedy Trial Tribunal on July 6 this year.
