Grameen Phone and Oligopoly

First of all let me congratulate GP for their success. Mr. Musabber (August 27) should know that like every sector our mobile telecom sector is also operating in a free market economy. So, any entrepreneur who wants to set up a firm in this sector can easily do so if he is capable of doing it and obtains operating permission from the government.

He is more or less blaming the GP for operating in an oligopolistic situation. What GP can do about it, if there is less competition? In other words it is better for GP if there is less competition. He should note that AKTEL's pre-paid outgoing rate is tk.3.5 per 30secs whereas GP's rate is tk.7 for 1min which is fixed whether you talk 2 sec or 59 sec. but still GPs subscribers are greater in number than other firms which shows that people are interested in GP for their quality. Why other firms are not coming in this sector depends on the market and strength of those firms.
